In January 2023, Anglicare Southern Queensland completed a significant $19 million redevelopment of the Meilene Residential Aged Care Home in Bundaberg. This extensive upgrade not only increased the capacity of the home but also brought a host of new amenities and features designed to improve the quality of life for residents and their families.
A More Spacious and Modern Home
The redevelopment added 36 additional beds, expanding the total capacity to 88 single-ensuited rooms, including a significant expansion of the memory support unit from 16 to 24 rooms. The new spaces provide a more comfortable and modern living environment for residents, ensuring that the Meilene meets the evolving needs of the ageing population in the region.
Addressing Community Needs
Sue Cooke, CEO of Anglicare Southern Queensland, highlighted the importance of the redevelopment for both the residents and the wider Bundaberg community. “We know Bundaberg has an ageing population and a higher proportion of individuals with chronic health conditions, including dementia, compared to the rest of Queensland. With that, brings an increased demand for aged care services,” Mrs Cooke explained.
The expansion at Meilene is a direct response to this increasing demand, providing the community with greater access to high-quality residential aged care services.
A Sense of Community and Comfort
The redevelopment also focused on improving the home’s community feel, enhancing connectivity and accessibility for both residents and visitors. Key upgrades include a new self-serve café and lounge area, a multimedia and library space, and an upgraded community area that can host special events and celebrations.
Additionally, the entire facility underwent significant refurbishments, offering modern furnishings, fixtures, and individual air conditioning for each room.
Outdoor spaces were also enhanced, with the addition of a children’s play area and improved car parking, making the home more welcoming for families and visitors.
Creating Jobs and Supporting the Local Economy
Beyond improving the living environment, the redevelopment has had a positive economic impact on the region, creating 144 new jobs in Bundaberg. These positions span a variety of roles, contributing to the local economy and providing new opportunities for residents.
A Collaborative Effort
The redevelopment was completed over six stages by Hutchinson Builders, ensuring that the work was carried out efficiently while minimizing disruption to residents.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate the completion of the redevelopment, and ultimately offer improved access to high quality residential aged care in regional Queensland,” Mrs Cooke said.
