Our history

From a women’s refuge in 1870 to one of Queensland’s largest and most trusted care providers, our story is one of compassion, resilience, and innovation.

Over the years, we have:

  • Pioneered community nursing in Queensland to help reduce infant mortality and improve public health
  • Expanded aged care services to create safe, supportive environments for older Queenslanders
  • Led the way in specialist care, supporting people living with HIV/AIDS, homelessness, and mental health challenges
  • United under the Anglicare name, bringing together services to create a comprehensive care network across the state
  • Grown to support over 40,000 Queenslanders every year, helping individuals and families live with dignity, hope, and independence.

Through it all, our mission remains the same—to walk alongside those in need with love, care, and humility.

Our today

Today we have over 3,500 staff and hundreds of volunteers, we provide essential services to people in need across Queensland’s cities, towns, and rural communities.

We work with families, young people, the elderly, and vulnerable individuals, ensuring they receive the support, dignity, and care they deserve. Whether it’s helping an older person live independently at home, supporting a young person in foster care, or providing a safe place for someone experiencing homelessness, our commitment remains the same – to be there when Queenslanders need us most.

Every year, we:

  • Deliver over 1.25 million hours of community aged care, helping older people stay in their homes longer
  • Provide more than 400,000 nights of care for children in out of home care
  • Support thousands of women and young people experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, homelessness, ensuring those without a home have a pathway forward
  • Advocate for social justice, working to inform policies and drive change that makes Queensland a fairer, more inclusive place for everyone.

Our future

Anglicare Southern Queensland is more than a care provider – we are a voice for change. We believe in shaping a society where no one is left behind, advocating for policies and support systems that allow every Queenslander to live with dignity, opportunity, and hope.

Through advocacy, education, and community partnerships, we work to:

  • Reduce homelessness, ensuring that safe, affordable housing is accessible to all
  • Strengthen aged care services, adapting to meet the needs of Queensland’s growing elderly population
  • Support children and families, giving young people the stability and care they need to thrive
  • Create a more just and inclusive society, challenging inequality and injustice wherever we see it
  • With faith in our hearts and the strength of our long history behind us, we are committed to making a lasting impact – not just in the lives of individuals, but across Queensland as a whole.

Because when we care, advocate, and act together, we can change lives for the better.
