3 Ps of getting home safely with dementia

People living with dementia are at greater risk of becoming lost and experiencing devastating outcomes as a result. Often, confusion about how to report a missing person living with dementia can delay search efforts and lead to an increased risk of adverse outcomes. The 3 Ps of Getting Home Safely with Dementia project aims to improve outcomes for people living with dementia who go missing in Australia.

About the project

People living with dementia are at greater risk of becoming lost and experiencing devastating outcomes as a result. Often, confusion about how to report a missing person living with dementia can delay search efforts and lead to an increased risk of adverse outcomes.

Background and objectives

Based upon their findings from a first phase of the project, the researchers have developed a new risk assessment (Prepare) and care planning tool (Prevent) as well as a Missing Persons policy and action plan (Prompt Response).
Staff at Anglicare Southern Queensland are participating in co-design workshops to adapt and pilot these 3Ps (Prevent, Prepare and Prompt Response) resources for residential aged care; and are now helping to pilot the resources.

In addition to its relevance in residential aged care, the project will be of value to carers of people with dementia, such as those participating in Anglicare’s new carer peer support and respite program.

It also complements the work of our Specialist Dementia Care Program, currently at St Martin’s Taigum. Further units will soon also be established at Abri on the Gold Coast and E.M. Tooth at Manly.
