Extreme heat warning system for older Queenslanders project (Ethos)

The Ethos study will enable older people and carers to monitor their heat exposure, identify risk in the home and respond by using effective cooling options. The project responds to the increasingly warmer world in which we’re living, and aims to develop an early warning heat system in the home to ensure older members of the community can continue to live at home safely and comfortably.

About Ethos

The Ethos study will enable older people and carers to monitor their heat exposure, identify risk in the home and respond by using effective cooling options.

The project responds to the increasingly warmer world in which we’re living, with projections for longer, hotter, and more frequent extreme heat conditions. These conditions disproportionately affect older persons, due to a combination of physical, socioeconomic, and physiological factors.

Background and objectives:

The main objective of Ethos is to empower older people to be heat prepared and heat safe in their homes. This will enable older people and their carers to:
• monitor heat exposure
• identify risk in and around the home
• respond by using effective cooling options.

The monitoring system is comprised of temperature and humidity sensors that are strategically positioned throughout participants’ homes. A base station that displays real-time data is tailored to users, based on their physical characteristics, personal living environments and prefered cooling options.

Staff and clients from Anglicare Southern Queensland’s Home and Community services are participating in Ethos by trialing the heat sensors and strategies. They are also providing input to determine the effectiveness of the process.
