For the first time, in September 2018, clients in one of Anglicare Southern Queensland’s Lifestyle groups were invited to attend the Noosa Booin Gari festival for one of their social outings.
Despite the downpour of rain, clients were thrilled by the festival. Staff, volunteers and clients were immersed in First Nations culture.
Clients were said to have been captivated by the atmosphere and crowds of people. One of the biggest highlights of the day was watching the performance of different dances and hearing about their different meanings.
Residents had a wonderful outing and learnt about the rich culture of Australia’s first peoples.
The event, which was organised by Kabi Kabi Traditional Custodian, Lyndon Davis, was about bringing people of all cultures and Country together.
The Booin Gari Festival hosted a range of talented local music artists including Emily Warramara, Chris Tamwoy and his sister Tania Rose. There were also groups of dancers including Gubbi Gubbi Dance, Yulu Burri Ba Dancers from North Stradbroke and Butchulla from Fraser Island.
