Flying our flags

In 2019, the St Laurence’s Anglican Parish, along with Anglicare Southern Queensland’s Children and Families branch in Caboolture, refurbished the flagpole on the church and office grounds.

The flagpole accommodates three flags: the Australian flag, the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag. It recognises the Traditional Owners of the land, and of Anglicare’s commitment to First Nations people.

The team believes that the installation is an important gesture and a small step closer to Reconciliation.

The flagpole’s installation has been a core element of a broader initiative to embed recognition of First Nations culture and take steps toward Reconciliation, within work and everyday life.

The office now subscribes to a ‘flag roster.’ Rostered staff members raise the flags each morning and lower them before closing in the afternoon. The team believes this has been an effective way for the team to embed cultural awareness as a collective responsibility and demonstrates how small actions can raise awareness of Reconciliation.
