A brief intervention group program for people wanting to stop their use of harmful behaviours, emotional abuse or violence in their family and/or intimate relationships.

Program details

The Family Peace Project is an eight-week brief intervention group program for people who use violence and abuse in their family or intimate relationships. It provides a safe and supportive space for you to learn, grow and create change by developing skills and understanding to build peaceful and respectful relationships.

This trauma-informed program focuses on:

  • helping you understand what drives your core beliefs and causes you to act with violence
  • taking ownership for healing yourself and your relationships
  • exploring your personal experiences of harm and abuse
  • understanding attitudes of entitlement and control
  • supporting your motivation to change
  • taking responsibility and becoming accountable for your behaviours.

Program benefits

The Family Peace Project:

  • is trauma-informed and evidence-based
  • focuses on responsibility, promotes accountability and supports behaviour change
  • welcomes participants from all genders and diverse backgrounds including LGBTQIA+ and culturally and linguistically diverse people
  • offers flexible in-person session formats: either as a men’s group program (up to 16 participants), individual, or small group sessions.

Eligibility

This program is for individuals:

  • aged 17 years and over;
  • who have recently interacted with police or the courts regarding domestic and family violence;
  • have no more than one Domestic Violence or Police Protection Notice (expired or otherwise); or
  • who are referred through the DFV Court Diversion Scheme and are deemed eligible by the Court.

What do the sessions cover?

This program is comprised of an initial orientation session where participants will learn about harmful behaviours and the emotions behind them. This will be followed by eight sessions which include:

  1. We Create What We Fear – how our experiences influence how we interact with others, understanding how the past impacts your current relationships, and how healing can improve your future.
  2. Out of the Shadows – helping you find the courage to make positive choices.
  3. Golden Messages – exploring hope and belonging.
  4. Healing Relationships – find ways to repair and create lasting connections.
  5. Sex and Consent – learn respect and empathy in intimate relationships.
  6. Parenting with Respect – build strong and respectful bonds with your kids.
  7. Why We Do What We Do – look at what motivates your actions.
  8. Building Lasting Change – learn how to live with honesty, courage and peace in your relationships.
Are there group and individual sessions available?

The Family Peace Project can be facilitated in group sessions for men (where group participation is suitable) and in individual or small group sessions for women, non-binary participants, and men requiring tailored support.

Are online sessions available?

All sessions are delivered in-person with no online options available.
