Domestic and family violence can create a legacy of trauma for entire families. This program is designed to support every family member and facilitate recovery and healing.
Program details
This program is delivered in individual and group settings to assist children and their families, and to support their recovery from domestic and family violence.
Your counsellor can provide:
- Children’s counselling
- Family counselling
- Individual counselling
- Support for families affected by family violence
- Support for children who experience or have witnessed family violence
- Education for individuals who use, or have used, violence and abuse against their family or partner.
Program benefits
The goal of our family violence counselling program is to:
- Help you and your children achieve and maintain positive family relationships while prioritising safety
- Provide advocacy and education to all family members affected by violence
- Guide safe decision making
- Support recovery from exposure to domestic and family violence.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this program, you must:
- Be under 18 years old, and
- Live in the Greater Brisbane area.

Legal support
As part of this program, we have a dedicated court support practitioner to provide information, support guidance and referral to male respondents on domestic violence orders.
Free and confidential support is also available for people attending Brisbane Magistrates Court who have been impacted by domestic and family violence, including:
- Accessing the court’s safety facilities
- Understanding Domestic Violence Protection Orders (DVPO) and knowing what to do if one has been breached
- Completing a DVPO or amending an existing one
- Understanding their options and the court process
- Safety planning assistance
- Referrals to other relevant legal and community services
- Crisis counselling and emotional support
- Completing applications for legal aid.

Are there any costs or out of pocket fees?
There are no costs to you. The Specialised Family Violence Service is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services.
Will I receive professional counselling?
Yes, our counsellors are fully trained professionals, and all sessions are confidential.
Are the counselling sessions confidential?
Yes, all sessions are completely private and confidential.
