What is foster care?
Foster care provides a safe, nurturing home for children and young people who can’t live with their families. The goal is to reunite children with their families whenever possible, but during their time in care, they need a stable environment where they can grow and thrive.
How can you help?
Anyone with the passion to make a difference can become a foster carer. You don’t need to be married, have kids, or own your home—just be yourself and be willing to make a difference to a young person in need. We’ll support you through the application process and match you with children who need your care. You must be at least 18 years old and pass a Police check, Blue Card check and a police check, along with an assessment and training to ensure you have the skills to care for a child.
Your home
You don’t need to own your home to become a foster carer, and renters can participate with approval from their landlord. Children in care benefit from having their own private space, but sharing a room may be suitable in some cases, depending on the needs of the child and your family.
Support along the way
As a foster carer, you’ll be paired with a dedicated practitioner who will guide and support you throughout your journey. You’ll also join a community of fellow carers, with access to training programs, resources, and 24/7 phone support whenever you need it.
Ongoing connection
As part of the Anglicare community, you’ll have access to a network of carers for advice, encouragement, and shared experiences. We host events and provide ongoing resources to help you throughout your journey as a foster carer. You’re never alone – we’re in this together!
Types of foster care
Fostering is flexible, and there are a few different options to suit you and your family dynamics. Whether you’re looking to provide care part-time or full-time, there’s a type of fostering that can work for you.
If you have a family, it’s important to think about how fostering will fit into your household and how it could impact everyone involved. We’re here to guide you every step of the way, offering support and advice to help you make the best decision for you and your family.
The goal of foster care is reunification
The aim of foster care is to reunite children with their families when safe. As a foster carer, you’ll support children in staying connected with their families, maintaining vital bonds, and helping ease their feelings of loss. Though reunification can be emotional, knowing you’ve positively impacted a child’s life makes it all worthwhile.
