The youth co-responder model teams Queensland Police and Youth Justice staff so they can respond together to young people who are offending or at risk, especially after hours. Instead of only enforcing the law, the team also links young people into housing, health, education and family support services. Anglicare partners with these efforts through its own youth justice and housing programs.
A co-responder is usually a Youth Justice or community practitioner who works alongside police to engage young people safely, de-escalate situations and connect them with support rather than just further charges. They might meet a young person on the street, at home or in custody and then stay involved, coordinating referrals to services like Anglicare for practical and therapeutic help.
Queensland’s community safety approach now mixes youth justice laws with more rehabilitation and community-based support. Co-responder teams, transition programs, and partnerships with organisations like Anglicare aim to reduce reoffending by keeping young people connected to housing, school, culture and family. The emphasis is on long-term safety through support and accountability.
