Common questions
Here are the most frequently asked questions we receive about our aged care services.
What are the three main types of aged care services in Australia?
The Australian Government mainly funds three types of aged care: help at home (programs like Commonwealth Home Support and Support at Home), care in an aged care home (residential aged care), and short-term or flexible care such as transition care and respite. Together, these options support older people to stay independent, recover after illness, or live safely with 24/7 support.
What is the difference between aged care and residential care?
“Aged care” is the broad term for support for older Australians, including help at home, short-term care and aged care homes. Residential aged care is a specific type of aged care, which refers to living in an aged care home with 24/7 onsite support, meals, personal care and clinical care, when it’s no longer safe or practical to stay at home.
How do you acess government-subsidised aged care?
To access government-subsidised aged care you generally need to: be an older Australian (usually 65+ or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples), live in Australia as a citizen or permanent resident, and be assessed as needing support through My Aged Care. An assessor looks at your health, daily living and safety needs to decide which services and funding level are appropriate.
What are the three main categories of assistance in aged care?
Older people usually receive assistance in three broad ways: help at home with daily tasks, nursing or personal care; short-term or respite care to recover from illness, hospital stays or to give carers a break; and care in an aged care home for people who need ongoing, higher-level support. Anglicare provides services across these areas so support can change as your needs change.
