Common questions
Here are the most frequently asked questions we receive about our respite centres.
The daily cost of day respite depends on your funding (for example Commonwealth Home Support, Support at Home, DVA or QCSS), location and the level of support you need. Government subsidies usually cover most of the cost, and you pay a small, agreed contribution. Anglicare will clearly explain fees, funding options and any out-of-pocket costs before you start respite care.
In Queensland, most people start by contacting My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or online to request an assessment for respite care. After your assessment, you can choose a provider such as Anglicare for centre-based, in-home or residential respite. Health professionals, hospitals or existing services can also refer you directly if you need urgent or short-term support.
A day respite centre is a safe, supportive place you can visit for part or all of the day to enjoy social activities, gentle exercise, meals and personal support. It gives carers a planned break while the person they care for spends time with trained staff and peers. Anglicare’s respite centres focus on wellbeing, routine and connection.
The Australian Government subsidises most respite care costs, and you may contribute a daily fee based on your income, type of respite and program you use. For example, CHSP and Support at Home have client contributions, while residential respite involves a basic daily fee and sometimes means-tested charges. Anglicare helps you understand fees upfront, so there are no surprises.
Residential respite in an aged care home is usually available for up to 63 days each financial year, with possible extensions if your care needs or your carer’s circumstances change. Day or in-home respite can be arranged more flexibly, from occasional visits to regular scheduled support. Anglicare can help you plan respite around your family’s routine and caring responsibilities.
