Common questions
Here are the most frequently asked questions we receive about our program.
How much does couples counselling cost in Australia?
Private couples counselling in Australia typically costs $150–$250 per session and usually isn’t Medicare-rebated. Anglicare’s program is funded through the Australian Government’s family relationship services, meaning sessions are free or low-cost depending on your situation. You can access up to 12 sessions with a qualified counsellor, delivered in person, by phone, or via Microsoft Teams, with all fees explained upfront.
How often should you go to couples counselling?
Most couples benefit from weekly or fortnightly sessions at the start, then gradually spacing them out as communication and stability improve. Anglicare offers up to 12 sessions, and your counsellor will suggest a rhythm that fits your goals and emotional capacity. Many couples attend between four and twelve sessions in total, with optional follow-up check-ins to maintain progress over time.
Will I receive professional counselling?
Yes, our counsellors are fully trained professionals, and all sessions are confidential.
Is Relationships Australia counselling free?
Relationships Australia operates separately from Anglicare and offers income-based fees rather than universally free counselling. Some programs are subsidised, but most couples pay a reduced fee depending on circumstances. In Queensland, Anglicare may be more affordable because our couples counselling program is government-funded, providing up to 12 free or low-cost sessions. Our intake team can help you compare both options.
How long is a couples counselling session?
A typical couples counselling session runs 50–60 minutes, allowing enough time to explore issues safely without feeling overwhelming. Anglicare follows this format, offering up to 12 sessions with flexibility to attend together or individually when needed. Sessions can be held face-to-face, by phone or via Microsoft Teams, and your counsellor will tailor the structure to your relationship goals.
Does marriage counselling work in Australia?
Marriage counselling can be helpful for couples who want to improve communication and conflict resolution in their marriage. The effectiveness of marriage counselling depends on both partners’ commitment and willingness to work on improving their challenges within their marriage.
Do I need to attend all 12 appointments?
No, your participation is voluntary and you do not need to attend all 12 appointments. The number of sessions is up to you (up to 12 appointments).
