Common questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions we receive about our program.

Are there any costs or out of pocket fees?

Family counselling is free or a nominal co-payment. Please discuss costs with our team.

What are the disadvantages of family counselling?

Family counselling can feel uncomfortable at times because it asks everyone to be honest about difficult patterns, which may temporarily increase tension. Sessions also require time, commitment and emotional energy. However, Anglicare counsellors work at your pace, focus on safety and respect, and help families decide together how deeply they want to explore particular issues or conflicts.

What is reportable family therapy?

“Reportable family therapy” usually describes counselling ordered by a court, where the therapist provides written reports about progress and risk back to the court or legal representatives. Confidentiality is more limited than in standard counselling, and safety concerns must be documented. Anglicare’s mainstream family counselling is voluntary, focuses on wellbeing, and follows Australian laws on privacy, child safety and mandatory reporting.

What is the purpose of a family therapist?

A family therapist helps people understand how their relationships, communication styles and histories shape what’s happening at home. Rather than taking sides, they create a safe space where everyone can be heard and work on shared goals. At Anglicare, therapists focus on strengthening bonds, improving safety for children and adults, and helping families navigate transitions like separation, blended families or grief.

Will I receive professional counselling?

Yes, our counsellors are fully trained professionals, and all sessions are confidential.

Do I need to attend all 12 appointments?

No, your participation is voluntary and you do not need to attend all 12 appointments. The number of sessions is up to you (up to 12 appointments).
