Moving through grief with meaning and purpose

Grief is a painful and deeply personal response to loss, bereavement, and significant life changes. While grief affects everyone differently, it can influence emotional wellbeing, mental health, relationships, and daily life. With access to practical tools, emotional support, and compassionate counselling, individuals can better understand their grief, develop healthy coping strategies, and begin the healing process. Through professional grief support services, people experiencing loss can find guidance, reassurance, and support as they navigate their unique grief journey.

Program details

Grief is a natural and often painful response to loss, bereavement, or significant life changes. This experience of grieving may follow the death of a loved one, the loss of a relationship, or the breakdown of a family unit, such as separation or divorce. Everyone experiences grief and bereavement differently, and the grieving process can unfold in many forms and stages over time.

Through our grief support program, grief counselling services, and bereavement support, our qualified grief counsellors provide practical, compassionate guidance to help you:

  • Process your loss and emotions associated with grief
  • Prioritise self-care, emotional wellbeing, and healing
  • Develop meaningful goals and a sense of purpose after loss
  • Build resilience, dignity, independence, and self-determination throughout your grief recovery journey

Common questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions we receive about our program.

There are no costs to you. This counselling service is delivered under our Family and Relationship Counselling Service (FaRS) which is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services.

Yes, our counsellors are fully trained professionals, and all sessions are confidential.

There’s no rule that you must “wait” a certain time. Some people benefit from support within weeks of a loss; others seek counselling months or years later when grief feels stuck, confusing or overwhelming. Anglicare encourages you to reach out whenever daily life, relationships or sleep are being significantly affected. Our counsellors work at your pace, whether the loss is recent or long ago.

Free or low-cost grief counselling is available through services funded by state and federal programs, including Anglicare’s grief and loss counselling in Queensland. You can self-refer by calling our counselling line, and in some cases your GP, hospital or palliative care team can also connect you. Where we can’t assist directly, we’ll help you find other funded supports in your area.

Consider grief counselling if your loss is making it hard to function day to day, if you feel stuck, numb or overwhelmed for a long time, or if your coping strategies are starting to harm your health or relationships. Anglicare counsellors don’t judge how you “should” grieve; they offer a space to talk, understand your reactions and find safer ways to cope.

Yes, all sessions are completely private and confidential.
