Anglicare congratulates Government on its agenda for charities

Anglicare Australia has pledged to work with the newly-elected Labor Government on its agenda for charities and not-for-profits, announced ahead of the Federal Election.

“Anglicare Australia congratulates the newly-elected Government for recognising that charities are not simply contractors. We have a role to play in making the country stronger and fairer,” said Anglicare Australia Executive Director Kasy Chambers.

“That’s why we are excited to work with a Government that has recognised the role we can play – and why the incoming Government’s agenda for charities is so important.

“Anglicare Australia is looking forward to working with the new Government on its commitments to consult with the sector, restore the freedom to advocate, and remove gag clauses from contracts.

“We are also excited about the Government’s pledge to fix charity fundraising, and its plan to double charitable philanthropy. We will help to implement announcements in any way we can.

“I thank Labor’s spokesperson for charities, Dr Andrew Leigh, for his recognition of the sector’s role in Australia and for leading this important agenda.

“I also want to recognise Dr Leigh’s vital work with the sector to resist attacks against charities and the community sector over recent years, helping to scrap rules that would have punished charities for speaking out.

“We are now looking forward to working with Dr Leigh and the Albanese Government to make this agenda a reality, and strengthen charities in the years to come,” said Ms Chambers.”
