Common questions
Here are the most frequently asked questions we receive about our counselling services.
Is counselling covered by Medicare in Australia?
Medicare rebates mainly apply to mental health care delivered by eligible professionals such as psychologists and some social workers under a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan through the Better Access initiative. Counsellors themselves generally can’t bill Medicare directly. Anglicare’s counselling is usually funded through government and community programs, which means many clients pay no fee or only a low contribution instead of using Medicare.
What is the difference between counselling and therapy?
In practice, counselling and therapy often overlap. Counselling usually focuses on specific issues or life changes, helping you understand feelings, build coping skills and make practical choices. Therapy (or psychotherapy) can be more in-depth and longer-term, exploring patterns, beliefs and past experiences. At Anglicare, your practitioner tailors the approach to your goals, whether you need short-term support or ongoing therapeutic work.
What is the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist?
Psychologists are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), complete accredited university training and supervised practice, and can diagnose mental health conditions and provide treatments.
Counsellors may come from a range of qualifications and focus on talk-based support, coping skills and relationships. Anglicare’s counsellors are trained, trauma-informed professionals who provide safe, evidence-based support but do not prescribe medication.
