The following resources and links have been provided by some of our partners and supporters of the Supporting Successful Tenancies initiative, including QShelter, RentConnect (Qld Dept of Housing), the Tenancy Skills Institute, Tenants Queensland and the Wesley Mission Qld STARH Program.

Please contact us if you know of other resources for property managers that would be useful to be included here.

QShelter

QShelter aims to build the strength and capacity of the housing and homelessness sector via training, resources, tools, facilitation and collaborative opportunities. They have a number of valuable toolkits developed for property managers:

Creating Sustainable Tenancies for Tenants with Complex Needs

A toolkit for community housing providers, but contains some very useful material for the private sector as well. An extensive set of resources and tools for property managers in both Queensland and NSW.

Domestic & Family Violence: Strengthening the Real Estate Response – a Toolkit to Guide Practice

A toolkit that provides:

    • information to increase awareness
    • tools to guide property managers to manage impacted tenancies
    • suggestions about how to advise landlords on the situation and its management.

Strengthening Practice in Responding to Domestic & Family Violence: A Toolkit for Community Housing Providers

A toolkit aimed at increasing community housing provider’s capacity to respond effectively to tenants experiencing domestic and family violence – also with useful resources for the private sector.

RentConnect

RentConnect helps people who would be able to manage a tenancy but who are struggling to access or maintain a foothold in the private rental market due to non-financial barriers, such as a lack of skills or understanding of how the private rental market works, or a short-term relationship, employment or other issue.

RentConnect officers can link clients to community services, and help capable tenants to overcome short-term tenancy problems.

A list of RentConnect offices can be found here.

Tenancy Skills Institute

The Tenancy Skills Institute has developed a course for tenants, in response to property managers’ concerns that tenants were lacking core skills required to sustain a tenancy.

‘Skillsets for Successful Tenancies’ covers communication, rights and responsbilities, maintaining and cleaning a property and finances and budgeting.

The course is delivered across Queensland.

For more information, contact the Tenancy Skills Institute here, via email or by phone at 07 3413 6997 (business hours).

Tenants Queensland

Tenants Queensland is an advocacy organisation for tenants in Queensland. Their website includes a host of easy to read information and fact sheets that may be useful print outs for property managers to share with tenants. For example:

    • Renting in Queensland – a quick overview of the rules for renting in Queensland including starting, during and ending tenancies, tips on resolving disputes and who is covered by the Act.
    • Starting a Tenancy – covers tenancy applications, deposits, tenancy agreements, entry condition reports and payment of bond and rent in advance.
    • Rent and Other Charges – includes tenant liability for rent and service charges, rent receipts and records, rent arrears and solving disputes over rent or other payments.
