Kirami extension provides quality aged care at Point Vernon

Kirami Extention Opening Anglicare Southern Queensland (SQ) continues to address the chronic shortage of residential aged care beds in Queensland after the completion of the extension to the Kirami Residential Aged Care in Point Vernon, Hervey Bay.

The $11 million extension was officially opened today with a dedication and blessing by Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane, The Most Rev’d Dr Phillip Aspinall and attended by State Member for Hervey Bay Ted Sorenson.

As part of the project, an additional 47 rooms were built and the facility was fully refurbished enabling the delivery of quality, contemporary residential aged care to the Hervey Bay region.

Anglicare SQ’s Director of Service Delivery Sue Cooke said  Australia’s ageing population is growing at a remarkable rate.

“There are 455,000 Australians aged over 85 with this figure predicted to exceed 1.6 million by 2044,” she said.

“There is already a shortage of residential beds nationally and this extension enables Anglicare to support older persons living in the Wide Bay region, providing access to the support and services they need.

“Kirami is able to support residents living with complex health conditions or a diagnosis of dementia who need palliative care.

“Residents, their families and friends, and our staff, have commented favourably about their fresh new surroundings and that the homely feel Kirami has been known for has been preserved.”

Kirami Residential Aged Care in Hervey Bay  is surrounded by lush bushland and just a block from the esplanade and ocean shore. Kirami is made up of six wings. Each wing has its own lounge, dining room and kitchen. Two wings are designed for residents with dementia to live comfortably and securely. Maintaining the leisure and lifestyle interests of residents is all part of the program. The large central communal area features coordinated weekly concerts and music sessions, regular craft sessions, bingo and board games.
