More than 500 people savour the ‘Good Grub’ in Inala

The Good Grub Club’s first ever public event was a raging success this week at the Inala PCYC Multicultural Youth Festival.

The mobile kitchen, which is used to teach young people at risk of homelessness across South East Queensland how to cook nutritious meals, is also set up to operate as a food truck at community events.

And judging by the success of its first outing at Inala, there’ll be many more invitations to come for the team of young people involved.

Three young people – Raymond, Lily and Malaika – teamed up with Anglicare Southern Queensland Youth Worker Lauren Tucker to serve more than 500 people, who enjoyed a delicious array of tacos, nachos and ice cream sundaes.

Lauren was thrilled with the success of their first public event and said they were now working towards securing a generator, which would allow them to attend a wider range of venues.

“We’re working in the community with young people who are experiencing housing crisis, so either living on the streets or couch surfing or living in shelters,” Lauren said.

“I go around to shelters in this food van and teach people how to cook easy and healthy food, because the link between good mental health and good diet is scientific.

“And we also work with the same young people from our cooking classes in this van, selling food at events.

“Right now we’re a real slave to our power cord and being near power, and having such a big van I think it would really open up a lot more places that we could go, and events we could go to, and shelters we could go and do our cooking classes at, if we had a generator.”

The Good Grub Club’s goal is to earn enough money at community events to buy a Honda EU70is Generator, which generally retails for around $6,500.

However, Lauren said a second-hand generator in good working order would also be very welcome.
