Students spend a ‘Night in the Cathedral’

Students from schools across Brisbane and Toowoomba sleep rough for a good cause

Every night, 21,500 Queenslanders don’t have a place to call home. They are mothers, sisters, uncles or brothers. And nearly one quarter are children or youth under 18. We believe everyone deserves a place to call home. So we challenged high school students to experience what it’s like to sleep rough…by spending a Night in the Cathedral, to help change the lives of Queenslanders in need.

Students from schools including The Southport School, All Saint’s Anglican School, St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, Anglican Church Grammar College and Toowoomba Anglican College and Preparatory School ditched their comfortable beds to be handed a piece of cardboard to use as a mattress on the concrete floor of St John’s Cathedral.

All for a good cause, the 80 students were provided an insight into what it would be like to spend a night on the streets, the event also provides much needed funds to help homeless and disadvantaged people in the community through Anglicare Southern Queensland projects.

The students successfully raised almost $16,000 for the cause.

On the night, the students were entertained with trivia competitions, a treasure hunt and a movie before sleeping rough on the floor of the Cathedral. Watch the video to learn more about the night.
