Housing is never just a roof over our heads.

The lack of safe, appropriate housing influences every element of people’s lives — their access to services, their health, safety, employment, even the nature of their relationships. It creates intergenerational disadvantage that weakens the social and economic fabric of our community.

Anglicare’s annual Rental Affordability Snapshot has underlined the dire lack of affordable rental accommodation for those on low incomes for more than a decade now, and the situation is only becoming bleaker.

We have gone beyond the tipping point, with COVID impacts on housing availability and surging rents, the looming termination of NRAS subsidies, and lengthy wait lists for social housing.

Together with community organisations and individuals across the country, we are urgently calling on all levels of government – local, state and federal – to work together to put people at the centre of the housing crisis, to acknowledge responsibility for a situation that has been long in the making, and to ensure that every Australian has a place to call home.
