Extended Hours of Care Allows Carers to Pursue Their Own Interests
Improving respite care for people living with dementia
Anglicare Southern Queensland has extended our hours of support, to give the people dedicated to looking after those they love with dementia or a neurodegenerative condition extra help when they need it. Our program introduces new hours that extend the normal carer support hours of 9:30am to 2:30pm, giving you access to flexible support from 6.00am to 6.00pm daily.
Anglicare’s day respite supports carers by offering short-term professional centre based day care for the aged and people with a disability. Day respite enables carers to pursue their goals through working, studying or volunteering with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that their loved ones are receiving professional care in safe and friendly surrounds.
Our respite programs (including programs specifically for men) focus on building bonds and friendships and provide a range of stimulating activities for the body and mind. Diversional Therapist, Kerry Slack creates a program of activities that are tailored to each client’s specific needs. These activities include:
- Arts and crafts
- Music
- Table games
- Sports competition
- Discussion groups
- Card games
- Light exercise
- Active minds
- Morning tea and lunches
- Social and educational outings.
Anglicare staff, nursing and care support workers and dedicated volunteers will ensure the social, emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs of the person you are caring for are met, with respect for their dignity, self-worth, and individuality.
Noelene Hutson is a volunteer who retired early from the public service and has been volunteering at the centre two days a week for the last 8 years.
“I thought I would keep busy by volunteering – I wanted to do something that included interaction with people and where I could make a positive difference in their lives.”
If you are caring for a loved one with dementia or a neurodegenerative condition you may be eligible for Extended Hour Dementia Respite Support.
